You may remember Melanie Martinez from season 3 of the hit television show The Voice where she auditioned with a sultry cover of Britney Spears’ Toxic. Now the 20-year-old New York native has released her debut album titled Cry Baby.

“Basically, the whole thing is childhood situations and themes that are turned into adult situations. There’s a contrast between the childhood and mature themes. It’s super dark and the stories are really twisted. But they’re definitely pop songs. It’s basically like a giant pack of story books.” Melanie told Entertainment Monthly in an interview. Cry Baby is a concept album that places childhood themes and adult situations together in a dark, whimsical world. For example, Tag, You’re It is a song about being kidnapped and Mrs. Potato Head is a song about plastic surgery. Cry Baby also features Carousel, which was the theme song for American Horror Story: Freakshow, and Dollhouse, the hit single that started all of the wonderful craziness that is Cry Baby.

Cry Baby tells a story from beginning to end, the story of the character Crybaby. Crybaby is a girl who is around the age of a third grade who goes some crappy things. She falls in love with a player, her mom kills her cheating father and his other woman and then poisons her so she’ll forget, she gets kidnapped, and she kills her em-prisoner by poisoning with milk and cookies. I would recommend this album to fans of Marina and the Diamonds, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey, or to anyone who likes unique music, alternative, and indie music. If I had to give this album a rating out of 10 I would give it a 10/10. I will say that some of the songs I had to give a few listens before I fell in love with them.
