Deer season opening brings new hunters, old traditions

TROPHY BUCK– Junior Colin Feezor shows off a buck that wondered a little too close to his home before school last week.

Memories of frosty and suspenseful times in a deer stand await many fellow students at Graves County this season. Everyone around here has either been hunting, watched hunting shows, or have a hunter or two in his or her family. Many love this “sport” and will travel long lengths to get the perfect shot. But, is there more to the tradition of hunting besides the actual killing of the animal? Here are some things people look forward to during the hunting season:

Spending time with family and friends This is the perfect time to spend a lot of quality time with both friends and family. Even if it takes being crammed up in a tree for a day or two, people will actually use hunting to bond with their kids, grandkids, etc.. Many families even change plans of going to the park for a day, to hunting for a weekend or two during hunting season.

Hunting cabin experiences Going to hunting cabins is another tradition of hunting. Some prefer the smaller, self-owned cabins, but there are also some large lodges as well. Although there aren’t too many lodges that are publicized around Mayfield, there are still a few newsworthy ones. One local lodge that has won awards is The Lodge at Emerald Waters located here in Mayfield.

Learning new techniques Learning techniques from older relatives to pass down to the younger generation is another tradition of hunting. Where else could one learn how to hunt than from people who have done it for years and years? You could get a hunting story and advice that could get you the biggest buck for seasons to come!
