HOLDING DOWN THE STAMPEDE– Junior Gracie Martin defends against a McCracken County player late in the third quarter

The first ever battle on the hardwood between first-timer, McCracken County Mustangs, and Graves County Eagles went down Tuesday night in the Eagles Nest.  The Lady Eagles came out with a win, while the boys came up short receiving a loss.

After handing a loss to Graves in football, McCracken County showed they are a force not to be reckoned with. Both schools, boys and girls basketball programs, have gotten off to an impressive start.

Coming into last night’s game, the Mustangs had a 9-4 record, and the Lady Mustangs 8-6. Graves County boys started off the night 12-1, being ranked number 16 in the state, and the Lady Eagles off to a 7-5 start.

Getting things started at 6:00 p.m., the man in stripes tossed the ball into the air, blowing his whistle starting what has already become a rivalry. The Lady Eagles battled neck-in-neck all 32 minutes with the Lady Mustangs.

With only seconds left in the fourth quarter, the score tied at 54, junior Gracie Martin got the ball, sinking a ten-foot floater to put the Lady Eagles ahead by two. The final score of the first ever meeting between Graves County and McCracken County was 56-54. The Lady Eagles moved to 8-5 overall, and 1-0 against the Mustangs.

The lucky number on January 7 was 56. After playing a hard fought battle, the Eagles could not reconcile the loss received Gridiron. McCracken County boys gave the Eagles their second loss of the season, with a 56-50 victory.

Although the Eagles received a loss, it wasn’t the best game of the season. Getting in foul trouble early in the game with the Mustangs getting hot at the wrong times, the Eagles couldn’t put everything together at the right time to pull out a win.

On February 1, the Eagles have a chance to take back a win and prove that they are the better team, and keep the series with McCracken County tied. The Lady Eagles will have another opportunity to not only play a great game, but gain another win.

But first, Graves County will take on district and cross-town rival, Mayfield Cardinals this Friday at the Eagles Nest. Both boys and girls hope to improve to 2-0 in district play.
