Wednesday, sophomores and juniors who chose to register will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT to compete for the National Merit Scholarship.

This National Merit Scholarship Program is for any sophomore or junior that meets the requirements to apply. Students will enter into a competition in which only 50,000 will be recognized for their academic excellence and only 8,900 will win Merit Scholarship awards or Special Scholarships.

When students signed up for the test they were given an informational packet as well as a practice PSAT to better prepare them. Students also received a link to a website of practice tests to have an even better chance of winning. “This test is a wonderful way to prepare for future tests such as the ACT as well as a potential way to earn money for college,” FAHS Guidance Counselor Marcie Leonard commented.

The test covers critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills in a set of five sections. Each section is either 25 or 30 minutes, making the test two hours and ten minutes. Students are encouraged to get a healthy amount of sleep the night before as well as a nutritious breakfast.
