DOWNTOWN FACELIFT– The south side of the court square is torn down, making room for a pavilion.

The demolition of historic buildings in downtown Mayfield has begun, starting earlier this week, and is planned to be completed in two to three weeks.

The property owners have taken numerous safety precautions by hiring a professional demolition company who has covered all the city-required bases of checking for dangerous materials. They are also having sprinklers running constantly to keep the amount of dust produced during the demolition to a minimum for people with respiratory issues, and have put up a six-foot tall fence surrounding the entire work area as another safety precaution.

After the demolition is complete the First Kentucky Bank plans to purchase the lot with plans to realign their drive-through. They wish to connect the new drive-through with the main building on the corner of 6th Street and Water Street.

The rest of the lot is planned to be the location for a covered pavilion area that will have the primary purpose of giving the downtown farmers market a permanent location. First Kentucky Bank plans to lease this to the City of Mayfield for a dollar a year. The city has intentions to use this venue, which will have a stage and amphitheater area, to hold scheduled events like festivals and concerts. The Mayor of Mayfield, Teresa Cantrell, commented on the project saying, “It will be a huge improvement to the downtown.”
