A San Francisco 49ers cheerleader took a knee during the US national anthem in an apparent attempt to protest like former quarterback Colin Kaepernick. While players throughout the league joined Kaepernick in his protests, this is the first known protest by an NFL cheerleader.

Kaepernick’s protest back in 2016, was aimed towards claims of police brutality of African Americans. But the action proved controversial, drawing criticism from fans and from US President Donald Trump. “They could have then suspended him for two games, and they could have suspended him if he did it a third time, for the season, and you would never have had a problem. But I will tell you, you cannot disrespect our country, our flag, our anthem — you cannot do that.” – Trump to Sean Hannity in an interview

Kaepernick opted out of his contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March 2017 and is now suing the National Football League, arguing that team owners deliberately froze him out because of his activism.

The woman, who has not been identified, was pictured kneeling before the team’s game against the Oakland Raiders.
