If you thought the pay at a fast food restaurant was bad, wait until you hear the questionable pay companies are legally allowed to present to workers with disabilities.

According to Vox.com, “current law allows employers to pay as little as $1 per hour, or less, to workers with disabilities if they can’t perform a job as well as a person who is not disabled.” Though justified in some circumstances, it makes one wonder if companies take advantage of this cheapskate opportunity.

There are some 150,000 workers today that work for these low wages in settings where they may perform a job slower or more incomplete than someone else. Some argue that these wages are fair due to disability checks and other help from the government, but others question the morality.

Junior Christian Lashbrook thinks “it’s unfair that people with disabilities get treated like they aren’t equal to everyone else. Everyone has their strengths, and nobody should be paid less for something they can’t help.” Should legislation take action, or is the unequal pay justified?
