HOTEL ABLAZE– Firefighters work to put out a fire at Mayfield Inn.

Graves County Middle and High students’ commutes were disrupted this morning due to a fire at the neighboring Mayfield Inn.

Traffic was at a near-standstill on Highway 121, as students approached the main entrance to the high school around 7:30 am. Officers redirected traffic north of Eagles Way, the main entrance to the high school, to Jimtown Road. Drivers then entered through the middle school entrance to reach their destinations.

The fire also had an impact on attendance, with high school secretary Tracy Taylor asking that teachers hold their attendance. “It started kind of crazy, but everything finished out smoothly,” Taylor said. She explained that having teachers hold their attendance helped with the chaos of late buses and drivers.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
