Eagles make history: Graves wins back-to-back district titles
Friday night the Graves County High School football team became the first team in school history to win back-to-back district championships after defeating Christian County 28-21.
After suffering a crushing 63-30 loss to McCracken County Friday before Fall Break and then beating district rival Ohio County 47-18 the next week, the Eagles came out with a bang on Friday night. Cody Crider came out on the opening kickoff with a big return that led to a field goal by Evan McCombs. The Eagles then scored two touchdowns, with an11 yard pass from Peyton Puckett to Schuyler Vowell and then a 23 yard run from Joey Marshall in the first quarter to put the Eagles ahead 17-0.
The second quarter wasn’t quite as productive, but the Eagles managed to squeeze in a touchdown with eight minutes remaining in the half with an 18-yard pass from Puckett to Jake Williams. Going into the locker room at the half, the Eagles had a 24-0 lead over Christian County.
While the Eagles kept Christian silent through the first half, the Colonels scored two touchdowns and remained scoreless themselves. Going into the fourth quarter the Eagles had a 24-13 lead.
Cody Crider scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a 53-yard run and a four-yard run. Christian County answered back with a touchdown of their own.
The Eagles shutdown the Colonels outscoring them in three out of the four quarters even though the two teams were neck and neck with passing and rushing yards. Puckett threw for 149 yards while the defense allowed 142 passing yards, but had three interceptions. The Eagles had 276 rushing yards and allowed 258.
Next week, district opponent Hopkinsville (4-4) will travel to Eagle Field to take district champion and number eight Graves County. With a win, the Eagles will move to 7-2 and 4-0 in district play.
