Musical Theater brings “Mermaid” to stage
Every year the musical theater class at Graves County High School puts on a play, and this year they chose “The Little Mermaid Jr. Live”. There were a total of six performances at the Graves County Performing Arts Center, two shows open to elementary classes Thursday, April 16th, and Friday the 17th, open to the public Saturday the 18th, and Sunday the 19th, and to give the high school students a chance to see the performances, the 23rd.
Some main characters include seniors, Ashton Saxon as Ariel, Roby Blackwell as Prince Eric, Tamia Fair as Sebastian, Tellis Cherry as King Triton, and Alexis Bell as Ursula. Students from elementary schools across the county also joined the high school cast members on stage as they portrayed various sea creatures that sang along in musical numbers such as “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl”.
When asked why she chose “The Little Mermaid” Director and Drama teacher LaVerne Waldrop, explained, “I think Disney appeals to all ages and the music is familiar to this age group, and I also had the right cast. I want students to learn from the process, that’s the way I direct. I want them to get familiar with their characters and take and use their ideas in their character. Then they have more ownership in the production. I want them to feel their way on stage.”
