NASHUA, NH — A Nashua couple is calling a neighbor a lifesaver after he rushed over and helped fight a garage fire at their home. The couple was away when they got the call that their garage was burning, and they later learned how quickly a nearby resident stepped in.

John Pellum and Carolyn Russell say they returned to black smoke and flames, but the fire did not spread into the house. No one was hurt, and the pair says their neighbor’s fast response made a real difference.

How the fire was stopped

The neighbor, Jonathan Paradise, says he ran down the street, grabbed the couple’s garden hose, and started spraying the flames before firefighters arrived. His Ring doorbell camera recorded the moment, showing the split-second response that the couple now credits with protecting their home.

Paradise said he was acting on instinct and wanted to keep the fire from reaching the house. He described the moment as pure adrenaline, focused only on slowing the flames until Nashua fire crews could take over.

Firefighters later extinguished what remained of the blaze. The garage was seriously damaged, but the home itself suffered only smoke damage, which was a relief for the homeowners after seeing the heavy smoke from the street.

Paradise said the woman later thanked him in person and called him a lifesaver. He told her she did not owe him anything, saying it was simply the kind of thing a good person should do.
