As 2022 kicks off, members of GCHS are finding new and interesting books to latch onto. Of all the books available, some have been recommended by previous readers, student and staff alike.

Of all book genres, Mystery, Non-Fiction, and Horror/Thriller seem to be top picks. “Who R U Really” by Margo Kelly, recommended by Taylor Griner, a GCHS Senior, is a mystery book that follows Thea Reid as she uncovers the personality and deceit behind a person she meets online.

“I love how the book faces real world scenarios we wouldn’t think could happen to us while also being very realistic,” said Taylor.

One of the books from the long list of non-fiction stories was recommended by Mrs. Marrs, one of the school guidance counselors. She recommended the book “The Color of Water” by James McBride. “The Color of Water” is a memoir written by McBride about his mother and her life as a white mother with a black child.

Mrs. Marrs enjoys the book because, in her words, “emotionally fulfilling and re-readable with a great message behind it.”

Briley Robins, a GCHS Senior, recommended the Thriller/Horror book “The Woods are Always Watching” by Stephanie Perkins. The book is about two best friends, Josie and Neena, who go on a hiking trip together as one last adventure before college. However, both friends must fight for their lives after a dramatic turn of events.

“The book is honestly one of the better thriller books I’ve read. The gore is detailed but not too over the top,” said Briley.

Ms. Archer, the GCHS librarian, recommended a list of some of the most popular books checked out recently as a list of honorable mentions. The list includes two graphic novels/manga, a romance, a thriller, a horror, and two fantasy books (in that order):

“Full Metal Alchemist” by Hiromu Arakawa, “Maximum Ride” by James Patterson and Na Rae Lee, “Fault in Our Stare” by John Green, “Taken to the Grave” by M.M Chovinard, “Monster” by Frank E. Peretti, the “Thorns and Roses” series by Sarah J. Maas, and finally, “Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard.

No matter what genres you enjoy most, the GCHS library has many many books to choose from. Make 2022 the year you check off some books on your reading list, or start a new series.
