Spurs’ Derrick White proves to be diamond in the rough
From playing Division II basketball to starting NBA point guard, Derrick White has been making strides for his team, and himself.
He attended the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, a Division II school for three years and then after a huge growth spurt and dominating performances, he made the decision to transfer to Colorado, a DI school, for his senior year. After his senior year, he declared for the 2017 NBA Draft and was selected 29 by the San Antonio Spurs
White received the new playing time early this year after the previous starter, Dejounte Murray came down early in a preseason game with a torn ACL. The Ringer’s Haley O’Shaughnessy wrote: “Without Murray, the newest and youngest of San Antonio’s familiar faces, the one most expected to make a leap, the optimism for one of those classic Popovich playoff runs begins to drain. These are not your mama’s Spurs.”
But after a 118-108 win against the Denver Nuggets, the Spurs now lead the playoff series 2-1 and White was the key to the Thursday win. He dropped a career-high 36 points on 15-of-21 shooting with five rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a block. After three playoff games, White averages 23 points on 69 percent shooting.
“He’s spectacular for somebody who got put into that position,” Head coach, Gregg Popovich said, told ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “To learn that position with a bunch of new players is really remarkable when he’s done what he’s done. So hopefully he’ll continue to play that way because it’s gonna be a long series.”
If he plays like he has been, that shouldn’t be an issue for him.
