History of Mayfield: A Photo Series
Back in the day, this massive building was a Merit Curlee clothing factory; they manufactured boys and mens suits, and were a popular place of employment for many people. Employing over 1,800 men and women in such a small town, it’s likely you know someone who worked there at some point. My grandmother and great grandmother worked there, they both have told me of taking their lunch breaks outside in front of the factory, they’d talk about the labor, the long hours, but most of all they talked about the people. Just like any other place of work, they made memories and bonds that last a lifetime- and THAT is what historic Mayfield was all about.
Behind each wall, there is a story. This old saying remains true for the small town of Mayfield, KY. Growing up, I always heard stories from my parents and grandparents about how Mayfield was the place to be. Families would spend their weekends here; the women would go shopping and the men would hang out around the court square playing chess or checkers. There were tons of factory jobs, restaurants, and even a shopping plaza. We see the old buildings, landmarks of what Mayfield used to be, but we don’t know the stories behind them. Today, I’m going to tell the stories of just a few of Mayfield’s historic walls.
