It’s the new year and everyone is working to better themselves in 2019. A new year’s resolution is often hard to keep up with and most people give up before January is even over; others are lucky to make it to March. There are many simple ways to keep up with your New Year’s resolutions and keep working towards a better you.

Some main reasons why people fail or give up their New Year’s resolutions are: unrealistic goal setting, low motivation, and trying to achieve the whole goal at once. A New Year’s resolution is a long-term goal intended to be completed over the course of a year, not in a few days. However, you can break down your long-term goal into relevant daily, weekly, and monthly short-term goals to make your end goal seem more achievable. This is a great way to stay motivated by tracking your progress. Checklists are another great thing to use if you set daily and weekly goals because you give yourself a variety of tasks to choose from. Although they all have to be completed, you aren’t restricted to a schedule. This gives you more freedom and you can decide what you feel up to achieving day to day.

If you tend to set high, unrealistic goals for yourself, the S.M.A.R.T goals outline is a great tool to help you modify your goal setting process.  S.M.A.R.T stands for : specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. This ensures that your goals are more achievable. Setting specific is important, broad goals are often too high to achieve and result in low motivation because you’re taking on too much. Give yourself a time limit to complete your goals, a starting and an end point, and be sure that you goals are achievable within the time you have given yourself to complete them.

It’s always hard to keep up with your goals when you have a lot of things to do in your day, make a schedule of you day and fill in any gaps with tasks that help you reach your goals. Bullet journals are another great way to keep track of daily activities, achievements, even your mood and finances. There are many other ways to keep track of your goals, progress, and many other things you just have to find what works for you.
