The Graves County Eagles Varsity Basketball Team hosted cross-town rivals, the Mayfield Cardinals, last Friday night.

This was one of the most anticipated games of the season since the 2016-2017 regional season ended with an overtime championship game in which Graves County won.

The Cardinals pulled away early in the first half and after trailing by as much as 15, the Eagles went into halftime 8 points behind Mayfield, the score being 35-27.

Leading scorer Ryan Mathis was then hurt in the third quarter and declared unable to come back to the game. As the Eagles struggled to over come a point deficit, and the loss of a key player, Trevor Grant hit a 3 point shot to tie the game at the buzzer. The game went into overtime, in which the Eagles unfortunately could not hold on and lost 79-73.

When asked about the game and how the team would prepare for their next match up with Mayfield, Jacob Savage said, “We’ll be ready and more prepared next time. We had a bad night and that just happens. We aren’t worried.”

The Eagles travel to Marshall County on Friday night to play the Marshalls’ in another regional match up.
