How Often Should We Really Wash Our Hair?

You’ve probably heard that it’s unhealthy to wash your hair daily. But what about the people who were cursed with naturally oily hair such as myself? How would we get away with that?

How often should we shampoo to maintain good hygiene without stripping our hair of important oils?

“While the answer is different for everyone, no one should need to wash his or her hair every day,” says dermatologist Paradi Mirmirani.

Oil is produced so your hair doesn’t dry out. When you over-wash your hair, you’re drying out your scalp, so it starts producing even more oil than before.

Experts say people should, on average, shampoo around twice a week (this can vary with different hair textures and oiliness).

So how is an oily haired person supposed to follow this without walking around looking like they’ve dunked their head in a grease pit? Easy. Train your hair to become less oily.

I did this over the summer. I used to wash my hair every single day. Bad for my hair and bad for my wallet. But because I would pull my hair up because of the heat outside, sometimes I would just skip washing my hair.

My hair was pretty gross at first because my body was used to having my hair washed every day. Eventually, I started shampooing every other day. Then, every two days, which is what I typically do now. My hair is currently very healthy, and it’s grown A LOT in just the span of two months. Overall, I wash my hair three or four times a week as opposed to every single day.

So, my oily-haired peers, you do not have to wash your hair every day. You’re welcome.

Although I should call to attention that this does not excuse you from taking showers every day. I don’t wanna smell your B.O., dude.
