On Friday, January 5th, The Graves County Eagles took on the Mayfield Cardinals. Both teams managed to end their games with a win, but both games were remarkable in different ways.
The Lady Eagles had a rough start to the game. To start the first half, the lady Cardinals were up 6 points. After halftime, the lady Eagles took the lead to end the game with a final score of 40-35. Leading the team was Morgan Alexander with 10 points. There are many takeaways from the game so that the team can improve.
“During the Mayfield game we needed to step it up. We also needed to pull through to win the game.”
Alexander, the only senior on the team, has her eye set on many goals this season. During the break, Alexander achieved one of her goals: she joined the 1,000 point club.
Among her other goals, Alexander says, “We want to win our district, [win] regionals, and then make our way to state.” says Alexander.
The Eagles on the other hand had a rough season last year against mayfield. In the regular season and in districts, they lost every game versus the cardinals. But this year, the Eagles were out for the win.
The boys were in the lead at the start of all 4 quarters, ending the game with a win. The final score, 49-39. Braden Waller especially had a good game, scoring 11 points.
“It was a big win.” says Waller. Though Graves took the win, there are still many things the team can do better.
Braden also stated, “ We can improve this year. We have to keep on playing together as a team and rely on our defense.”
This isn’t the last time Graves County will face Mayfield. On February 2nd, the boys and girls will play Mayfield at the Eagle’s Nest. Both GC teams are now (2-0) in the district.
