On March 24, 2022, the Mayfield/Graves Youth Leadership organization traveled to the Kentucky capitol building in Frankfort.

Students took a tour of the capitol and were able to go into the House of Representatives and witness a meeting.

“It was really cool to be in these rooms,” said Emily Oliver. “Being able to sit in on a meeting gave us insight into how the process really works.”

The students were also able to meet with Representative Heath and take a tour of his office as well.

“Heath has a wall dedicated to the city of Mayfield in his office,” said Ellie Youngblood. “I didn’t realize he was from Mayfield, and it’s very obvious he truly has Mayfield’s best interest at heart.”

Many students in Youth Leadership aspire to have a career in government, like Eily Canter.

“In high school and college, students need to be a part of clubs like FBLA and DECA,” said Representative Heath. “Being in these clubs is a great way to network, and it will further your career in the government.”

The conclusion of Youth Leadership’s trip was a meeting with Governor Andy Beshear.

“I never thought I’d be able to meet Governor Beshear in person,” said Emily. “He was very compassionate to us knowing we were some of the victims of the December 10, 2021 tornado.”
