Pork, Pie and Politics

For 136 years on the first Saturday in August, Fancy Farm, Kentucky with a population of 500 welcomes tens of thousands of people all across the country to their small town picnic.

By 8 in the morning, the picnic is already under way. Picnickers stood in line for more than an hour to get their hands on the best pork and mutton in western Kentucky. The workers actually start the day before at 10 a.m. and they let the food cook all night. This year they sold 18,000 pounds of pork and mutton.

But, the barbecue pits aren’t the only things that were heated at this picnic. The Fancy Farm picnic is notorious for their politics and their crazy commentators. Politicians from Majority leader Mitch McConnell, and republican presidential candidate Rand Paul and Kentucky governor Matt Bevin always make it a priority to attend this event. The politicians give a 2 minute speech while being booed and yelled at by the audience.

Other than food and politics, the town of Fancy Farm sets up little games for the kids to play such as ring toss and mini golf. For the adults they have a pavilion where the visitors can spend hours and hours playing bingo or they can participate in pull tabs. The money raised is then directly given to local families in need. So as everyone spends money and they have fun making memories they know they are helping a good cause.

At 10:00 a new truck was given away and this concludes the picnic. Vehicles have been raffled away since 1924 the first being a 1924 model T Ford. This year was a 2016 Dodge Ram and the winner was a 90 year old resident of Fancy Farm, Kentucky. According to picnic chairman Steven Elder, ticket sales topped $60,ooo and were sold in 42 states.

So if you are looking for something to do on the first Saturday of August next year, head to Fancy Farm, Ky. for pork, pie and politics.
